The Military Preparation School offers the chance for year 10 and 11 pupils to gain a fascinating insight into life in the Armed Forces. During their time on the course, students will be encouraged to enhance their teamwork and leadership skills through their participation in a wide range of activities, all with a military theme. Students will receive weapon training, basic fieldcraft tuition and involve themselves in low level infantry tactics. Every aspect of the course is specifically designed to engage the students in a unique learning environment, preparing them mentally and physically for military life.

At the end of each term, there is an overnight exercise where the students can practise all of the skills which they have acquired in the last few months. This includes setting up ponchos to form a military camp, cooking in the field, overnight patrols, camouflage and concealment and battle fitness training. These activities are designed to encourage the students to think for themselves and make decisions in a challenging environment.

Academic work is based on the students’ individual strengths and abilities. The emphasis is on developing Basic Skills and Key Skills which will provide recognised academic qualifications, as well as promoting greater individual confidence and enhancing self-esteem. The qualifications arise naturally from the activities which the students take part in during the course. During their time at the Military Preparation School, students can expect to gain ASDAN Youth Award, the National Navigation Award Scheme certificate, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, as well as individual Key Skills and Information Technology qualifications.
